Welcome
It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the Affair at
the Jupiter Hotel (2005) in Portland,
Oregon. This fair continues what we started last year, an opportunity for
professionals and
enthusiasts to join us for three days of intense focus on contemporary art.
Saul Ostrow, a participant in the 2004 fair and the Dean of the Cleveland
Institute of Art suggests
that, “Art fairs, beyond their economic impact on a community, have
in recent years become
important educational and cultural events. They form momentary museums of
contemporary art
"bringing together and juxtaposing art works in unexpected combinations
under novel
circumstances. What more could one want from art than the type of intense
aesthetic and social
experience that an art fair can afford. An art fair like the Affair at the
Jupiter Hotel gives the host
community not only a focus, but a sense of its cultural worth and ambition.”
Our fair is a intimately scaled event at a much-heralded boutique hotel.
The supportive management
and staff have conspired with us to provide a site for the intersection
of creative expression and
commerce. Affair at the Jupiter Hotel is the exhibition/event where you
can develop contacts with
knowledgeable dealers and curators, exchange opinions about emerging and
mid-career artists,
and make new acquisitions for your private or public collections. A panel
discussion, special lecture,
and numerous parties round out the educational and social offerings.
This year, the fair will coincide with the opening of the new Center for
Modern and Contemporary
Art at the Portland Art Museum. This is a significant event for the region
because it will make visible
the depth of the museum’s collections, and help to build knowledge
about the art of the past and the
present. We hope and expect that the ongoing presence of contemporary art
in our city will encourage
more exhibitions, more discourse, and more patronage.
We would like to thank all of the participants, sponsors, friends, and volunteers
whose energies
make the Affair at the Jupiter Hotel such a success. A special thanks to
Adidas for their generous
contribution this year.
